The birth of the modern, big budget, and (most importantly) successful superhero film probably came about with the release of Superman in 1978. With the success of the Superman movies and Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989, superhero films really started to become big business for the studios. Batman Begins, The X-Men and Spiderman trilogies all paved the way for Iron Man to kick off the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make masked heroes the biggest draw in cinema.
I hope I’ve included all the contenders for the best of all time. Where there’s more than one film in a series I’ve included the one I think is the best so apologies to Captain America: Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy II, Superman, Despicable Me 2, Blade II etc.
