There are plenty of films to whet the appetite for the sci-fi and fantasy fan. Here are some of them, and as many trailers as are available at the time of writing.

John Wick: Chapter 2

17 February 2017

He may not really be sci-fi or fantasy but John Wick is definitely some kind of superhero. I’m not sure this sequel can live up to the gritty action of the original that led to it becoming a bit of a cult classic, but it’s definitely worth a go.

The Great Wall

17 February 2017

Matt Damon… in China… with dragons?

Logan

24 February 2017

Now that Deadpool has proven that you can make money from an R-rated Superhero movie, Logan looks like it could be the best of the X-Men movies. Huge Ackman’s final outing as Wolverine sees him as a fading force with waning healing powers, trying to protect a young female clone of Wolverine from an evil organization. And with Professor X suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s it promises to be a gritty, dark tale of violence and self-sacrifice.

Power Rangers

24 March 2017

I was never much of a fan of the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers in my youth.  Maybe this will change my mind (but I doubt it).

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

April 25, 2017

Following up what is still, for me, the best Marvel movie ever is going to be a tall order. But the trailer seems to have the same mix of action and comedy to make this my most anticipated movie of 2017.

The Circle

28 April 2017

This could have been an episode of Black Mirror. Tom Hanks leads the people in “The Circle” where everything that everyone does is common knowledge. But guess what, it’s all a bit more sinister than he wants you to think it is.

Alien: Covenant

19 May 2017

Rumour is that the latest Alien movie will return to a more horror based style, similar to the original. Fingers crossed they deliver on the full horror of one of the scariest creatures to ever grace our screens.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

26 May 2017

The early POTC films were certainly the best so it remains to be seen whether Johnny Depp and co. can muster up enough originality to make this movie a success.

Wonder Woman

June 2, 2017

Is this the movie that can bring the DC Universe back from the awfulness that was BvS DoJ and Suicide Squad. Wonder Woman was one of the few high points of BvS so you never know.

The Mummy

9 June 2017

A reboot of The Mummy series with Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella. Looks like a more grown-up version than the Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz outings.

Spiderman Homecoming

July 7, 2017

Spidey back in action in the MCU after his brief outing in Captain America Civil War.  Tom Holland has been really well received as the Webbed Wonder and we have cameos from Robert Downey Junior and Michael Keaton as the baddie (his second recent outing as The Birdman).  Promises to be another hit for Marvel.

War for the Planet of the Apes

July 14, 2017

The first 2 instalments of the POTA reboot have been fabulous. Even though we kind of know where this movie will take us the journey looks like it’ll be a hell of a ride.

Blade Runner 2049

6 October 2017

Blade Runner is such a classic that the idea of a sequel is madness for many fans. But I just have to go and see it when it comes out. Just to find out. If it’s good it could be great.

Thor: Ragnarok

27 October 2017

Another outing for Thor, thundering his way through his enemies. No doubt this will progress the Infinity Stones story. Could it be a rare MCU movie that ends in defeat for the “good guys”, setting us up for Infinity Wars?

Justice League

17 November 2017

If Wonder Woman lives up to its potential then maybe Justice League will be worthwhile. Maybe.

Star Wars: Episode VIII

15 December 2017

Rumoured to be called “Forces of Destiny”, Episode VIII will continue the story of the Skywalkers and potentially reveal Rey’s parentage and the nature of Supreme Leader Snoke. Anticipation will be at fever pitch by December next year.
